The simple answer is no there are two process currently used in the number plate industry.
One: We use this one
This process involves printing the registration number directly on to the yellow or white reflective with a thermal printer and bonding the reflective to matching shaped piece of acrylic. This process is a sign of a quality manufactured number plate and is our preferred method. We have never received one complaint about the quality of our number plates.
Two:
This process involves printing the registration number onto a OHP like material and bonding it to a rigid plastic yellow or white coated in a reflective paint. These types of number plates are used predominately in the caused car sales industry as they are cheaper to buy. However because the front of the number plate consists primarily of a thin OHP front they are prone to what is called delaminating – this simply means the front OHP material comes away from the back of the number plate. This in turn makes the number plate unfit for legal road use and will fail the MOT.

What are number plates made from?
Number plates are made from two components firstly the yellow or white this is called the reflective and secondly the plastic front of the number plate is made from and called the acrylic.
How is the registration number printed on the number plate?
The reflective is cleaned thoroughly and then registration number is simply printed on to the reflective by a thermal printer and some clever software. The software ensures the correct legal spacing and legal font.
How is the reflective attached to the acrylic?
The rear of the acrylic is pre- coated with a industrial adhesive and the reflective is placed on top of the adhesive with the registration number facing the adhesive. The reflective and acrylic are then pressure bonded to stick them together.
